Weed is a city located in Siskiyou County, California, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the town had a total population of 2,967, down from 2,979 in 2000. Weed is about 10 miles (16 km) west-northwest of Mount Shasta, a prominent northern California landmark, and the second-tallest volcano in the Cascade Range.

Weed has made modest appearances in popular culture. John Steinbeck's novella-play Of Mice and Men begins with George and Lennie running away from Weed after getting into some trouble.

Weed in The Hot War[]

The life insurance payment Marian Staley received on the death of her husband let her leave Camp Nowhere with her daughter Linda. Since their hometown of Everett, Washington was destroyed by a Soviet atom bomb, she had no destination in mind but drove south until she reached Weed.[1] It was pleasant enough and Marian found work so they stayed. They were soon joined by Fayvl Tabakman, who'd been their cobbler in Everett.[2]

Marian Staley went to work as a secretary at the Shasta Lumber Corporation.[3] With the help of Dale Dropo, editor of the Weed Press-Herald, Staley was able to convince the town to invest in an ambulance after two loggers were badly injured.[4]

Weed in The House of Daniel[]

The House of Daniel passed through Weed on July 31, 1934, on their way to Redding. Jack Spivey found it a harmless little place, and had no idea where the name came from.[5]
