Vicki Garreau was the sister of Mary Flowers. When Mary and her husband Pete were killed as a consequence of a paranoid episode, Vicki and her husband Jim took custody of their colicky nephew, Doug. After they took Doug home from the hospital where he was being treated for injuries, Doug's crying shocked Vicki so that she spilled coffee on hand and suffered a mild burn. She began to wonder if such incidents might become commonplace.
