Tonmoya kept a hotel in Amblona, Astilia. When one of his guests, Baek Jarns, informed Tonmoya of the rat in his room, Tonmoya listened and promised to resolve the issue. In other places, Jarns reflected, hotelkeepers like Tonmoya would not have been so responsive.
Tonmoya was also impressed by Jarns' genuine enthusiasm for bulls, and thus became Jarns' friend.
Later, after the running of the bulls, Tonmoya gave the remains of Obert Ohn to Jarns, as both were from Dubyook, and no one else knew what to do with them. When Jarns proposed to sell off Ohn's property from the hotel, Tonmoya was dubious. He also confided in Jarns that Kime Kelbam, another member of the group that had traveled to Amblona, had asked Tonmoya for a loan.
Tonmoya is based on Montoya, the owner of the Hotel Montoya in Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.
