The Afrikaner Resistance Movement: What It Is was a 2004 non-fiction book by Eugen Blankaard, outlining the history and agenda of Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging. In the preface Blankaard proclaimed his admiration for Adolf Hitler, and declared that South Africa had joined the wrong side during World War II. He encouraged white men to stand up against racial equality laws and join to force the "kaffir" into a low station of life.

A copy of this book, brought back in time to 1860s Richmond, found its way to the attention of President Lee. While Lee didn't understand the history it referenced, he was able to confirm his suspicions that the mysterious men who had held the Confederacy in thrall since the end of the recent war were outlaws and renegades in their own world.[1]
