Ternat was the eldest son of Reatur and was in line to become domain-master upon Reatur's death. He was a wise, modest eldest willing to learn from Reatur, who was glad to have him. Ternat supported Reatur in his meeting with Fralk and escorted Fralk to the Ervis Gorge to expel him from Omalo territory--after urging Reatur to kill Fralk. He served as Reatur's ambassador to Dordal in the failed attempt to convince Dordal of the common threat from the Skarmer. On the way home, he saw humans coupling and informed Reatur that the humans' mission apparently included mates, the first step in teaching the Minervans of the differences between human and Minervan gender roles. Ternat's sense of decency was briefly offended by the idea of mates living to adulthood, but he soon came to accept it, and eventually befriended Lamra when Reatur permitted her to leave the mates' chamber of their castle.

When Dordal took advantage of Reatur's distraction to launch a raid on the other domain-master's massi herds, Ternat led a military force to retake the animals as well as others from Dordal's domain as punishment. On this raid, Ternat captured Dordal himself and took him away to Reatur's domain to live as a prisoner. Upon returning to Reatur's domain, Ternat and his forces stumbled upon the remnants of Fralk's forces, under the command of Juksal, and prevented the Skarmer from escaping to the flooded Ervis Gorge intact.
