Since it's published in a book, I can probably still get it from the library. Eventually. TR 01:16, December 16, 2009 (UTC)

Huh, he snuck one more in under the wire. He's had a prolific year for short stories, if nothing else. Some of them pretty good, too. And he needs it--His novels this year suck. So far LA isn't bothering me any, though. Turtle Fan 02:26, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
We knew this was coming. I was just assuming it was another on-line piece. Oh, well. We could stand a few more dragons here. TR 17:42, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
I mean, he got one last story published in 2009 just as that year was about to disappear forever. Turtle Fan 17:50, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
Oh. Got it. TR 18:11, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
Consensus is a beautiful thing on a page with a bunch of moderators of equal rank. Actually, we're kind of like the Atlantean army . . . is supposed to be, aren't we? Turtle Fan 18:49, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
Supposed to be. Yes, I suppose we are. TR 20:59, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
By the way, I've read up through the capitulation scene and I was surprised by how well Newton and Stafford worked together. They agreed on the short-term goals and worked toward them consistently and sensibly, each willing to abandon a sacred cow when the good of the campaign called for it. I enjoyed the places where their relationship showed dynamism; it reminded me of what the relationship between Orrin Hatch and the late Ted Kennedy is said to have been like. Unfortunately, it was developed inconsistently, with frequent regressions to basic adversarial mode. Turtle Fan 23:26, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
I did find those regressions plausible, however, as both are used to being adversaries. I also liked Stafford's ultimate pragmatism (although facing certain death will make one pragmatic), and HT's ability to write/convey it. That showed some restraint on HT's part. Or maybe I'm unfairly using Featherston as a benchmark for racists in an HT novel. TR 00:00, December 17, 2009 (UTC)
I think most characters in HT novels who have racism as part of their motivations--as a major part, anyway--are that intractable. As for the plausibility of the backsliding, I wasn't looking for them to follow a straight path the the Hatchet Burial Ground, but . . . I don't know, I guess I would have liked it if, in opposing each other, the way they went abput it reflected changes to their opinions about one another. Turtle Fan 00:40, December 17, 2009 (UTC)
