God these articles are ridiculously easy to write. Say a few words about where a character was, and when, and you really and truly have exhausted all useful information. It's so simple it's frustrating.

Dernen has the episode in France where he watched a French pubowner clobber that bastard non-com. That might be relevant later. I want to review HW to get all the particulars right.
I didn't even remember there WAS a Dernen. Most of the red POVs rang some sort of bell, however dimly. Turtle Fan 22:06, July 22, 2010 (UTC)
But yes, this last batch of POVs didn't do much of substance, beyond move around on the map a bit. TR 21:15, July 22, 2010 (UTC)
Any bets they'll be improved in the new book? The three characters I read were all by characters who were fairly memorable--by the standards of HW, I hasten to add. Even in SA they would have been distinguished by their blandness.
Actually, in SA the characters were doing nothing of note, but they all had long character histories and we remembered them, sometimes fondly, from earlier, better books. Except Jerry Dover, whom I would have thought would have made for a decent POV based on his supporting character role. I had thought the same about O'Dull, actually.
But the point is, if you already know the characters, you'll be able to keep them straight even though their scenes are all redundant. When you're meeting everyone for the first time, and it's just a long string of names, many of them from the same foreign language . . . You get this, I guess. Turtle Fan 22:06, July 22, 2010 (UTC)

And a point about Manchukuo: The Japanese weren't there as occupiers, they had been invited by Puyi. Yes, I know it's hard to say that with a straight face, but you have to remember that the Qing government had a high degree of legitimacy when it was created and the Manchus, who were sick and tired of the blatant racism of the KMT, were only too happy to have the Japanese among them, at first. I don't remember exactly when they realized that the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere was no bargain, but I do think public opinion was still on Japan's side in '38. There is one thing that left me scratching my head for a while. I could swear that Fujita's lietunant Hana-fasa-something was killed at the end of HW. Then W&E comes and he's there as if nothing happened. Am I right, or am I confusing 2 characters?WastedTime 16:55, May 20, 2011 (UTC)

Oops. You're right, he took two in the chest in HW, but there's another Lt. Hanafusa in W&G. I'm guessing HT error, but for the purposes of our project here, we'd probably call them two separate characters. TR 17:07, May 20, 2011 (UTC)
