Should we retitle this to "William Haywood"? We don't usually put nicknames in article titles, even universally recognized ones. Turtle Fan (talk) 02:16, January 16, 2014 (UTC)

Or "Bill Haywood", anyway. He seems to have preferred "Bill" to "William". TR (talk) 03:53, January 16, 2014 (UTC)
We do have the precedence of "Jimmy" rather than "James" Carter. Interesting story I heard is that when Carter was contacted by the US Navy that they wanted to name an aircraft carrier after him as they had with some previous (still living) US Presidents, he asked to have a sub named after him instead since he had served as a submariner and to call it the USS Jimmy Carter since that is what he is known as. And they did: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Jimmy_Carter_(SSN-23) ML4E (talk) 20:03, January 16, 2014 (UTC)
We have several precedents that can support Bill instead of William, but I'm hard pressed to think of any we can stretch to cover "Big Bill." We haven't got "Slick Willie Clinton" or Joltin' Joe DiMaggio or anything like that. Turtle Fan (talk) 20:51, January 17, 2014 (UTC)
