Tahiti is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia, located in the archipelago of Society Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is the most populous island of French Polynesia, accounting for 68.6% of the total population. The capital, Papeete, is located on the northwest coast.

Tahiti was the largest of several islands controlled by France within French Polynesia, with its administrative centre in Papeete. After the Peace of Cairo in 1944, the government known as Free France relocated its base of operations to the island's capital of Papeete after the rest of their empire had been annexed.
In 1965, France was liberated from Germany after its defeat in the Race-German War of 1965, and the capital moved back to Paris.
