Steve Whortleberry was a medieval European history grad student at the University of California, Berkeley. He was actually covering the classes of the department chair, Blaustein, while Blaustein was in Hamburg. He'd been recently divorced. One fateful day, while grading finals in Blaustein's office, a grad student named Jen Barkman wandered in, looking for her professor's office. After discussing the extensive library in Blaustein's office, the subject of Jen's dissertation, and the miserable existence of grad students generally, Steven asked Jen for her phone number. He was painfully aware of a "law" formulated by his friend, Ed Logan, who'd been divorced himself years before, and once drunkenly proclaimed "all the good ones are taken". Still, Jen gave him her number, so he remained cautiously optimistic.
That evening, he called her and arranged an elaborate date for the next night. However, the following evening, Jen called and asked to change their plans because of her dog had begun to limp and she wanted to be close by. Jen cooked a pleasant meal for them, they discussed their respective lives (Jen was also divorced), and, feeling comfortable with each other, made love, then went to a movie. After returning Jen to her residence, they briefly discussed what would happen next, and decided to go wherever their relationship led. Steve went home, and despite the late hour, he called Ed Logan and told him that Logan's Law was wrong. Logan hung up on him.
