Stephen Dodson Ramseur (May 31, 1837 – October 20, 1864) was one of the youngest Confederate generals in the American Civil War, securing the rank of brigadier general at the age of 25 on November 1, 1862. After a distinguished career, he was mortally wounded and captured at the Battle of Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah Valley on October 19, 1864, and died in Union custody the next day.

As veterans of the War of Secession, 86-year-old Patrick Cleburne and 77-year-old Stephen Ramseur were invited to appear on the platform next to President Woodrow Wilson in August 1914 when Wilson announced the Confederate States were entering the Great War.

Both men were wearing the old-style gray uniform; Reggie Bartlett concluded that such aging lions could wear whatever they pleased.
