The Seven Cities of Gold is a mythological group of cities perportedly located in what is now the southwestern United States, including New Mexico. Rumors of these cities reached the government in New Spain, and Francisco Vásquez de Coronado organized an expedition in 1539 to locate the cities. While the expedition did find the Zuni pueblo of Hawikuh, the reports of cities of fabulous riches soon proved false.

It was during an expedition for the Seven Cities of Gold in 1539 that Estevánico arrived at Hawikuh, where he was promptly slain.
