Dr. Saul was the best scientist in the Valley. In 2097, Captain Horace called for him to investigate the electric lights found in a hidden sub-basement of the Westwood Mendoza family. Saul became furious at the ignorance displayed by the Valley soldiers and began investigating the electrical source himself. He demanded a ladder from Musketeer Dan who found and brought one down. Saul climbed up and removed a florescent tube to examine the socket. Dan did slip away unnoticed when Saul began talking about chipping away the concrete to follow the wire.[1]
Some other soldier had chipped away the concrete since Dr. Saul managed to find a small box that the wires led to. However, he insisted it was too small to be the source of the electricity. However, he didn't know what it was if not the source.[2] Dr. Saul also found a hidden entrance to a second secret room in one wall of the basement. He found it by closely examining the wall with a magnifying glass and spotting hairline cracks where the door met the wall.[3]
