Sapporo is the fifth-largest city in Japan by population. It is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture.

Sapporo was the capital of North Japan, the puppet state created by the Soviet Union from Hokkaido and northern Honshu after World War II. It was destroyed by the first American atomic bomb on August 6, 1949 at the end of the Japanese War.
