The San Francisco Chronicle was founded in 1865 as The Daily Dramatic Chronicle by teenage brothers Charles de Young and Michael H. de Young. The paper grew along with San Francisco and was the largest circulation newspaper on the West Coast of the United States in 1880; today, it is Northern California's largest newspaper, serving primarily the San Francisco Bay Area, but distributed throughout Northern California, including the Sacramento area and North Coast.

The San Francisco Chronicle was the main newspaper of San Francisco in an alternate where Imperial Germany ruled the world.

In the late 21st Century, it reported the discovery of the wreckage of the Hindenburg, which had crashed in the ocean off the coast of France in the 1940s, and German colonial troops resorting to the use of machine guns to put down a rebellion in India, among other stories.
