San Atanasio was a suburb of Los Angeles. The town was located only a few minutes drive from LAX. Over the past few decades its nature had changed from an exclusive neighborhood to what the media called "working class".

Through these changes Lt. Colin Ferguson of the San Atanasio Police Department had lived and worked and raised a family in the town.

About forty minutes after the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted, San Atanasio was hit by a mild earthquake which was felt as a gentle rolling motion that went on and on.[1] While the quake didn't do any damage, the region was dusted by volcanic ash. It was thick enough to turn all surfaces a cement grey including lawns. It was an immediate irritant to eyes and lungs but Ferguson couldn't help wondering on its long term effects to people's health.[2]
