Samuel William Yorty (October 1, 1909 – June 5, 1998) was a politician from Los Angeles, California. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives and the California State Assembly, but he is most remembered for his turbulent years as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1973.
Sam Yorty in The Man With the Iron Heart[]
Although a Democrat and veteran of the United States Army Air Force, Assemblyman Sam Yorty was sympathetic to Diana McGraw's efforts to end the American occupation of Germany. He arranged a rally for Mothers Against the Madness in Germany in Los Angeles in 1946. He was a very good speaker and politician. Although he loved his hometown, Yorty was ambitious enough to seek election to the House of Representatives, which would involve relocating to Washington.[1]
