Richard Brevard Russell, Jr. (1897–1971) was an American Democratic politician. He served as Governor of Georgia from 1931-1933 before being elected to the U. S. Senate in 1933, where he served until his death in 1971.

Richard Russell in Southern VictoryEdit

Richard Brevard Russell, Jr. was a Confederate politician from Georgia and a staunch supporter of the Freedom Party. He served as President Jake Featherston's ambassador to the United States. On June 21, 1941, he delivered to US President Al Smith an ultimatum demanding that Smith withdraw from all former Confederate territories ceded to the United States following the Great War. He was declared persona non grata, as was his counterpart, US Ambassador to Richmond, Jerry Voorhis.[1] The next day, the Second Great War began.

Literary NoteEdit

The Confederate ambassador to the US is known only as "Russell" and is identified as a Georgian. Based on these two facts and on Turtledove's penchant for including historical figures in the Southern Victory series, the editors of this Wikia are satisfied that Richard Russell is the man he had in mind.
