Raton (ra-TONE, Spanish for "mouse") is a city and the county seat of Colfax County in northeastern New Mexico. The city is located just south of Raton Pass. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,282 people in Raton.

Raton in The House of Daniel[]

In May 1934, Raton's economy was based on cattle, the railroad, and the coal mines. Spanish and English were both commonly used, and there was a good-sized black population.[1]

The House of Daniel played the semipro Raton Mice (a redundancy since "raton" is Spanish for "mouse"). The crowd wasn't huge, but it justified the House coming. The team was integrated, and reflected the demography of the town. Their star player was their first baseman, Luke, a large, muscular man who could hit with power.[2] Thanks to Luke, the Mice beat the House of Daniel, 7-4.[3]
