Titanic

RMS Titanic was a British Olympic class passenger liner that became famous for her collision with an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland, and resulting dramatic sinking on the night of 14-15 April 1912, resulting in more than 1500 deaths.

The tragedy has been often dramatized on film, including the 1997 epic by James Cameron.

Literary comment[]

The Titanic is referenced proverbially in some Harry Turtledove works with a post-1912 Point of Divergence. In Supervolcano[1] and The War That Came Early, some characters say "We're all in the same boat, and it's the Titanic".

RMS Titanic in "Before the Beginning"[]

Recordings of the sinking of the RMS Titanic were circulated after the invention of the time-viewer, but the images of the actual sinking were not as interesting as the re-enactment depicted in the 1997 film by James Cameron. Nevertheless, the sinking was featured in an episode of Mysteries Revealed.[2]

RMS Titanic in "Last Flight of the Swan of the East"[]

The Titanic was one of the best-known luxury liners of the 1910s. Hellmuth von Mücke rode a dhow across the Red Sea, which made his previous ride, the Following Sea, seem by comparison like the Berengaria or the Titanic.

Literary comment[]

The context suggests that the Titanic is still in operation at the story's end in 1915.
