Pyongyang is the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (commonly known as North Korea) and the largest city in the country. Pyongyang is located on the Taedong River and, according to preliminary results from the 2008 population census, has a population of 3,255,388. The city was split from the South P'yŏngan province in 1946. It is administered as a directly governed city. According to tradition, Pyongyang was founded in 1122 BC, and has served as a de facto or de jure capital of various governments that governed Korea.
Pyongyang in The Hot War[]
Kim Il-sung directed the North Korean invasion of South Korea from Pyongyang, as well as the subsequent conduct of the Korean War after it was folded into World War III. Pyongyang had received substantial air-defenses from the Soviet Union.[1]
In April 1951, the United States launched a substantial bombing raid against Pyongyang, in an effort to kill Kim. The attack used conventional explosives, rather than atomic weapons. Kim survived, although the attack did a fair amount of damage.[2] The loss of a half dozen B-29s and two Twin Mustangs was deemed an acceptable tradeoff for the damage inflicted.[3]
Pyongyang survived the war without being subjected to atomic bombing.
