Penzance was a state of the United States of Atlantis. Like most of the Atlantean states, it derived its name from the first settled town in that region of the continent. It was north of Croydon, near North Cape. The people of Penzance were notoriously independent. The state held no copperskins nor Negroes, and very few whites. Consequently, the state of Penzance was overwhelmingly opposed to chattel slavery. Nonetheless, during the Atlantean Servile Insurrection of 1852, Penzance Senator Hiram Radcliffe convinced Consul Leland Newton that the government must act now, lest the uprising go too far and the opportunity to end slavery be lost.
