The Outback is the vast, remote, arid area of Australia. The term "the outback" is generally used to refer to locations that are comparatively more remote than those areas named "the bush" which, colloquially, can refer to any lands outside the main urban areas.

When the Race Colonisation fleet arrived in 1962, they heavily colonised the Australian Outback, finding the arid landscape familiar with that of Home. Here, Race colonisation progressed uninhibited by the local inhabitants and flourished. During the Race-German War, Race cities were targeted by German ballistic missile submarines and although many were destroyed, the distance of the region from Germany meant that these cities weren't hit as hard as those in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
By 2031, the ecology of the Outback had been heavily effected with flora and fauna from Home.
