Opening Atlantis

From Turtledove

Jump to: navigation, search

Opening Atlantis is the first novel in the Atlantis series (it was preceded by two novelettes, "Audubon in Atlantis" and "The Scarlet Band"). It was published by Roc, December, 2007.

Technically, Opening Atlantis is not a novel, but a collection of three novellas that chart the history of the continent Atlantis through the eyes of English fisherman Edward Radcliffe and his descendents. The course of the book follows the discovery of the continent and its settlement from 1452 to roughly 1756. Critical eras include the creation of New Hastings under Radcliffe; the destruction of the pirates of Avalon (led by Red Rodney Radcliffe, a descendent of Edward) by a joint Anglo-Dutch-Atlantean navy (under the leadership of Red Rodney's cousin, William Radcliff) in the mid-1660s; and the expansion of English Atlantis into French Atlantis in an analog of the Seven Years' War.
