Odilo Globocnik (1950s-2011) was the High Commissioner of Ostland Affairs for the Greater German Reich. In 2011, he was briefly installed as Acting Führer of the Reich by the Committee for the Salvation of the Greater German Reich, overseen by Reichsführer-SS Lothar Prützmann. He held the office for roughly 24 hours.

When Prützmann launched a Putsch against reformer Heinz Buckliger in 2011, Globocnik was installed as the new Führer while Buckliger was placed under house arrest. However, the Putsch failed a few days later when rumors circulated that Prützmann was a Jew and the Wehrmacht moved to support Buckliger. Prützmann committed suicide; Globocnik attempted it, but was too nervous, and failed. When Globocnik attempted surrender himself, a crowd of Berliners rushed forward, beat him to death, and hung his body upside down from a tree.

Globocnik's brief term was marked generally by disdain and derision from the German people. As Willi Dorsch put it, "Who the hell pays attention to the Odilo Globocniks of the world?" The only televised speech Globocnik made was incoherent, and the only person who demonstrated any faith in Globocnik was Lothar Prützmann. His name was not widely known to the general public before his installation. Government officials, such as Dorsch, knew that he'd been caught driving drunk months before the Putsch.

Literary CommentEdit

The historical figure Odilo "Globus" Globocnik (1904–1945) was one of the crucial architects of the Holocaust, and committed suicide at the end of World War II. It is unclear whether Harry Turtledove intended for his fictional Globocnik to be a descendant of the historical figure.
