The Nanking Massacre or Nanjing Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was a mass murder and war rape that occurred during the six-week period following the Japanese capture of the city of Nanjing (Nanking), the former capital of the Republic of China, on 13 December 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During this period hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were murdered and 20,000–80,000 women were raped by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army.

Nanking Massacre in Days of InfamyEdit

The Nanking Massacre was still talked about among soldiers in the IJA long after it happened. As Captain Sanji Iwabuchi and his SNLF were preparing to fight inside Honolulu to the last man, Commander Minoru Genda realized that Iwabuchi didn't care if the civilians lived or died. Genda also realized that Honolulu was going to be the Nanking Massacre all over again but also that it would be a devastating propaganda blow even greater to that of the Massacre if that were to happen. After thinking about this, he concluded that this was no way to fight a war.[1]

Nanking Massacre in The War That Came EarlyEdit

When the Chinese launched an uprising against the Japanese in Shanghai in December, 1939, U.S. officials became worried that there might be a repeat of the Nanking Massacre.[2]
