The Mermaid Tavern was a London tavern, east of St. Paul's Cathedral, which operated during the Elizabethan era. It was the meeting place of the so-called Friday Street Club, which included several of the era's literary luminaries. A possibly apocryphal tradition holds that William Shakespeare was a member, often debating Ben Jonson and usually winning.
