Shakespeare and His Contemporaries-1-
The Mermaid Tavern was a London tavern, opened during the Elizabethan era. It was the meeting place of the so-called Friday Street Club, which included several of the era's literary luminaries. William Shakespeare may have been a member; a long standing legend holds that Shakespeare frequently debated Ben Jonson, and often won.

The Tavern stood east of St. Paul's Cathedral.

William Shakespeare was drinking in the Mermaid Tavern when he learned of the pending performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the Rose.
