Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) was an American soldier and explorer appointed by President Thomas Jefferson to lead an exploratory mission of the Louisiana Territory, which Jefferson had recently purchased from France, from 1803 to 1806.

In 1963, Meriwether Lewis and his second-in-command on the journey, William Clark, were honored when the US Air and Space Force named its first atomic-powered spaceship, the Lewis and Clark.
