The Marne River is a river in France, a right tributary of the Seine River in the area east and southeast of Paris. It is 514 km (319 mi) long. The river gave its name to the départements of Haute-Marne, Marne, Seine-et-Marne, and Val-de-Marne.
The Marne River was the site of two battles during World War I. The first battle was a turning point of World War I, fought in 1914. The second battle was fought four years later, in 1918.
Marne River in The War That Came Early
France and Germany both remembered the first battle on the Marne in 1914, and how Germany's offensive drive on Paris was halted. When war came again in 1938, France hoped to repeat the miracle, Germany hoped overcome the river. In early 1939, it appeared that the Marne was once again the nemesis of a German advance.
