Lviv (Lvov in Russian, Lemberg in German, Lwow in Polish) is a Ukrainian city that was the capital of the Kingdom of Ruthenia from 1270 until the kingdom fell in 1340. After that, Lwow was succesively part of the Kingdom of Poland (1340-1772), the Holy Roman/Austrian/Austro-Hungarian Empire (1772-1918), the First Polish Republic (1919-1939), and the Soviet Union (1939-1991).
