Luke Phelps worked on the fishing trawler Ripple out of Boston, Massachusetts with George Enos. After being captured by the Confederate States and placed in a prisoner of war camp, he repeatedly insulted and heckled the prison guards. One guard shot him in anger after Phelps claimed he visualized a toilet bowl as the guard's face.
