Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 – March 6, 1888) was an American novelist. She is best known for the novel Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Little Women was loosely based on Alcott's childhood experiences with her three sisters on the home front during and just after the American Civil War. It was very well received and is still a popular children's novel today. Alcott never married and died in Boston, Massachusetts in 1888.

After the Confederate States won the War of Secession, the Union writer Louisa May Alcott wrote the novel After the War Was Lost. Alexandra Clemens read this during the Second Mexican War.[1]
