Lindsey Kincaid was a high school chemistry teacher at Piscataquis Community Secondary School in Guilford, Maine. In the second winter after the eruption of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, she attended a town hall meeting where Jim Farrell spoke about preparing during the summer months for the next winter. After the meeting, she was just outside the door when Rob Ferguson accidentally stepped on her foot. He was part of Squirt Frog and the Evolving Tadpoles and Lindsey had enjoyed the concerts they had put on in the park during the summer so she agreed to have Rob walk her home.[1]

The high school continued to try to teach despite the poor weather due to the eruption. However, it proved difficult both for the students trying sometimes to get to school with snowdrifts taller than they were and also for teachers especially those that didn't live in Guilford. With the eruption, gasoline couldn't get to town in winter and so those outside town couldn't drive in. Lindsey was saddened by these lost opportunities but didn't know what to do about it.[2]

The relationship between Lindsey and Rob continued to develop, such that Rob didn't want to take the band on the road when the way became passable the following summer.[3] The two maintained separate residences with Rob staying at the Trebor Mansion Inn until he suffered a hunting accident the following winter. After he received treatment for his wounded leg at the local clinic, Lindsey offered her place to save him from climbing stairs and a ladder at the Inn. Rob joked he should get shot more often.[4]

Lindsey and Rob were married the fourth winter after the eruption. Lindsey's school principal was her matron of honor with a couple of teachers as bridesmaids. Rob had Justin Nachman as his best man with Charlie Storer and Biff Thorvald as his groomsmen. Rob's father was in California so Dick Barber stood in for him. Lindsey's parents were divorced but both came with her father bringing his new girlfriend, a women about Lindsey's age, along. Although held in the Episcopalian church, it was a civil ceremony presided over by Jim Farrell. The reception afterwards was a feast with moose meat, roasted goose, stewed squirrel and a home-smoked ham. Music for dancing was provided by Squirt Frog with a local kid filling in for Rob on bass. It was the local social event of the winter, well attended and the two felt very much married afterward.[5] They later had a son named Colin Marshall Ferguson.[6]
