Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev (Russian, Леонид Ильич Брежнев) (1906–1982) was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (and thus political leader of the USSR) from 1964 to 1982, serving in that position longer than anyone other than Joseph Stalin.

Leonid Brezhnev, who'd died only two years before the Soviet mission to Minerva, was remembered for his distinctive eyebrows, which resembled those of Oleg Lopatin. Otherwise, he was not remembered kindly.
