Kurt Haldweim (1918-2010) was the third and as of 2010, the longest serving Führer of the Greater German Reich.
Haldweim died at the age of 91 after a series of illnesses and recuperations. He was an autocratic ruler, but nowhere to the extent of his predecessors, Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler.
Haldweim was born in Austria, and was a prominent member of the SS before ascending to the office of Führer in 1985.
[edit] Literary Note
Haldweim was based on the historical Kurt Waldheim (1918-2007). Presumably, Turtledove changed the character's name as Waldheim was still living at the time In the Presence of Mine Enemies was written.
