Kemble was one of the three judges at Jeremiah's trial. His views seemed to change from one case to the next. Alfred Douglas made a passionate plea that the judges think of what history would say about them if they held slavery as moral. Kemble decided that history would look more kindly upon him if he ruled in Jeremiah's favor, which he did.
