Kate's mom was an investment banker.[1] She and her husband planned Kate's wedding to Archimedes Kidder with the precision and effort of the German General Staff planning Hitler's invasion of the Low Countries and France. This irritated some of her bridesmaids and one referred to Kate as a "Bridezilla". Overhearing this, Kate's future father-in-law, a mad scientist named Tesla Kidder, decided that the metaphor was worthy of reification.[2]
During a shopping trip at the Bed Bath & Beyond in the Northridge Mall, Kate began reificating into just that, thanks to Tesla Kidder's long-range genetic recodifier. She turned avocado green with scales, grew a muzzle with sharp teeth, and a long tail. When she opened her mouth to speak, a bubbling shriek came out instead along with a blast of fire. The bridesmaids and the staff saw this and began to run. Kate, not yet realizing what had happened followed with more shrieks and flame. This carried on until her fiancé and future mother-in-law pressed Tesla Kidder to undo the transformation. He did, and Kate had only a vague idea of what happened.[3]
The wedding was a success. After the vows, Archie said "Kiss Me, Kate!". She did, but didn't quite understand the reference. Kate's family suspected that Tesla Kidder had something to do with Kate's transformation. Kate's mom, a bit under the influence, approached Kidder about their suspicions after the ceremony, but he assured her that he was too far away in his laboratory. She accepted that answer.[4]
