Karen's relatives on her father's side, including her aunt, Amanda, and her great-grandfather, Seneca, were very affectionate toward her. Her mother's relatives were much more distant, owing to their disappointment that she was half black. However, as time passed, the Changs realized that they were missing out on their grandchild, and gradually grew more accepting.
