Jozef Tiso (13 October 1887 - 18 April 1947) was a Slovak politician and Catholic priest who rose to the Presidency of the Slovak Republic, a German puppet state established from the eastern half of occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II. Initially, Tiso was resistant to the idea of an independent Slovakia, but ultimately bowed to German pressure in early 1939, lest the region be annexed by Hungary under German supervision. Tiso was captured after the war, and executed as a war criminal.

Jozef Tiso in The War That Came Early[]

Jozef Tiso had succeeded Andrej Hlinka as leader of the Slovak People's Party in 1938, concurrent with Germany's invasion of Czechoslovakia in October 1938.[1] Tiso and his fellow nationalists were quite happy to become German puppets when the Slovak Republic was created after Czechoslovakia's fall. Tiso became the head of state of Slovakia.[2]

As Germany was responsible for Tiso's position, Tiso provided Slovakian troops for Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during 1940 and 1941.[3]

When the Committee for the Salvation of the German Nation overthrew the Nazis in April 1944, they nonetheless insisted on keeping Bohemia and Moravia under German rule, and further ensured that Slovakia remained an independent country.[4] The Allies, in no position to force the reconstitution of Czechoslovakia, agreed to the demand, and Tiso remained in power.[5]

Jozef Tiso in Joe Steele[]

After Hitler invaded and partitioned Czechoslovakia, he set up an "independent" Slovakia governed by a group of homegrown Fascists headed by Father Jozef Tiso.[6]
