John Wayne (real name Marion Michael Morrison, though the middle name is sometimes recorded as Robert or Mitchell, May 26, 1907 - June 11, 1979) was an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning American film actor. He epitomized rugged masculinity and has become an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive voice, walk and height. He was also known for his conservative political views and his support in the 1950s for anti-communist positions.

Wayne portrayed a few historical figures, including Temujin, Genghis Khan in The Conqueror (1956), Davy Crockett fighting his his last battle in The Alamo (which he also directed, 1960), and William Sherman in How the West Was Won (1962).

John Wayne attended a reception for the benefit of Chinese Communist rebels Liu Han and Liu Mei during their fundraising trip to Los Angeles. Sam Yeager met Wayne during the party. Yeager's wife Barbara was disappointed that Cary Grant was not there as well.[1]
