Date of Birth: 16th century

Jane Kendall was an English widow who kept a boardinghouse in London. In 1597 and 1598, her tenants included playwright William Shakespeare,[1] petty criminal Peter Foster,[2] glazier Jack Street,[3] beggar Sam King,[4] and "cunning woman" Cicily Sellis.[5]

Kendall was a Catholic under the Protestant Queen Elizabeth and thus benefited from the replacement of Elizabeth's faith as England's official state religion with her own after the Spanish Armada conquered England in 1588.[6] Nevertheless, while Kendall preferred Queen Isabella and King Albert to Elizabeth, she resented the presence of Spanish soldiers as occupiers in England.

Widow Kendall was extremely thrifty with her money, and would often rebuke her lodgers for piling too much firewood on the hearth when they wanted to warm themselves.
