James M. Cox (1870-1957) was a governor of Ohio, a United States Representative from Congress, and the Democratic candidate for the office of President of the United States in 1920. He was badly defeated by Republican Warren G. Harding.
Throughout his life, Cox wore many hats, including high school teacher, reporter, owner and editor of several newspapers, and secretary to Congressman Paul J. Sorg.

Even in 1932, the Democratic National Convention were still smarting from James M. Cox's defeat. The fact that the Convention had deadlocked between Joe Steele and Franklin D. Roosevelt (who had been Cox's running-mate) made things even more stressful.
