Hillsboro in Southern Victory[]

In 1943, as the U.S. Army drove the Confederates out of Ohio, the Confederates tenaciously held onto Hillsboro. Since the town was situated on a plateau, it was strategically important and the Confederates used it as an artillery base to shell U.S. forces.

Sgt. Chester Martin was part of the forces that stormed the hill in an attempt to take the town. They succeeded but only after U.S. barrels threatened to encircle the town and cut off the Confederate line of retreat forcing their withdrawal.
