Gracchus was a black man in the Confederate States. A former sharecropper, Gracchus commanded a resistance cell outside Augusta, Georgia during the Second Great War. Cassius joined Gracchus' group in 1944, just after Cassius' family was taken by Freedom Party Stalwarts. Cassius remained with Gracchus group for the duration of the war. When U.S. forces arrived late 1944, Gracchus' men joined with them. The cell became U.S. auxilaries, and Gracchus patrolled the streets of Madison, Georgia.
Gracchus and Cassius frequently discussed the fate of Negroes now that the war was over. Both agreed that the only the continued presence of the U.S. would ensure the remaining blacks anything resembling safety.
