Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au (from Latin: aurum) and an atomic number of 79. It has been a highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since the beginning of recorded history. The metal occurs as nuggets or grains in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. Gold is dense, soft, shiny and the most malleable and ductile pure metal known. Pure gold has a bright yellow color and luster traditionally considered attractive, which it maintains without oxidizing in air or water.
Literary Comment
Just as it has been a critical driving force in human history, gold is a driving force in the works of Harry Turtledove, including his alternate history, fantasy, and science fiction. Gold and its acquisition have not been plot points specific to any one work, but general relevance is worth noting in an article.
Gold in Southern Victory
Gold was a precious metal and the driving force behind all economies of the world, resulting in the Gold Standard: A monetary system in which the standard economic unit of account is based on a fixed quantity of gold.
When the Confederate States won the War of Secession in 1862, it found it had very little in the way of naturally produced gold in which to back its economy under the Gold Standard. This caused the CSA to import quite a lot of its gold.
After the Great War, the CSA was forced by treaty to pay huge reparations to the USA in as much gold as it could, damaging the value of the CS dollar. The same applied with France to Germany, which resulted in France leaving the Gold Standard in the 1920s.
