Title of Nobility:
Duke of Argyll
Lord Privy Seal, Postmaster General
George Douglas Campbell, Duke of Argyll
(30 April 1823 – 24 April 1900) was a 19th-century
aristocrat, scholar, and politician. He served in
Prime Minister Lord Palmerston
's Cabinet as Lord Privy Seal from 1855 to 1865.
George Douglas Campbell served in Prime Minister Lord Palmerston's cabinet during the American War of Secession. A rock-ribbed enemy of slavery, Campbell strongly opposed Palmerston's decision to extend diplomatic recognition and military protection to the Confederate States in 1862, weakening US President Abraham Lincoln's bitter complaint that the British aristocracy believed "a slaveocracy's better than no 'ocracy at all".
