The Free Republic was a short-lived country that was carved out of the parts of the southern United States of Atlantis conquered by slave-guerrillas during the Atlantean Servile Insurrection in 1852.

The slaves had risen up from the whites' yoke by rebellion, the masterminds being Frederick Radcliff and Lorenzo.

Initially, the movement called itself the Liberating Army, and did not have a long-term political agenda. Before long, however, Frederick Radcliff decided that if the whites did not accept the rebels' demands, the only option was to make a country of free blacks and copperskins. He and Lorenzo became the Tribune and Marshal of the Republic, respectively.

In the end, after the Slug Hollow Accord, where the whites effectively accepted the slaves' demands, the Republic was formally dissolved and the former slaves became Atlantean citizens, not merely residents.
