Harry Turtledove: Index > Aerial Combat Deaths

I guess I didn't realize we had that many characters who died in combat whilst piloting some flying contraption. We could even do an OTL/Fictional Work split if we created a category. TR (talk) 19:18, April 22, 2014 (UTC)

The thought occurred to me as I was categorizing. Its not that surprising given the number of pilot POVs in various military stories who would witness colleagues being shot down. I support the creation of the sub-cat and the OTL/Fictional split. ML4E (talk) 19:42, April 22, 2014 (UTC)

I'm wondering if maybe "Aerial Combat Deaths" be made a sub-cat of "Blunt-Force Trauma Deaths" within each of the OTL/Fictional split so we don't have both in the character articles? We also keep the "Aerial Combat Deaths" parent in the "Killed in Action" cat. ML4E (talk) 22:32, April 23, 2014 (UTC)

I'm inclined to keep them separate, since we don't always know for sure that the impact is what kills a given character. Mitsuo Fuchida and Teerts were POVs, so we can say for certain with them. But characters who crash into a body of water, for example, could survive the impact just long enough to drown, or be incinerated when the plane exploded, etc. My 2-cents. Well maybe. It just seemed that "Blunt-Force Trauma Deaths" was a catch-all for any deaths due to plane crash where the person wasn't explicitly killed some other way whether fire or drowning like you said or was hit by gun fire (via other aircraft or anti-air fire). I suppose "Aerial Combat Deaths" would now be a valid catch-all instead with "Aviation Accident Deaths" covering accidental air crashes. ML4E (talk) 23:40, April 24, 2014 (UTC)
