Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter was a US fort on an island overlooking Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. It was attacked by Confederate forces on April 9, 1861, beginning the American Civil War (alternately known as the War of Secession and the Second American Revolution in various Harry Turtledove alternate history stories).
